Popular life and culture in Japan’s capital city near Jimbocho, Awajicho, Ogawamachi and Shin-ochanomizu stations! Delicious Japanese food and tea, unique clothing, popular entertainment, and Shinto nightlife! For your autumn/winter 2014, the Yes in Japan team recommends:
Visit these popular shops and cultural centres if you study/work near Awajicho, sleep at a hotel in Tokyo’s Chiyoda ward, or walk in the nearby gardens of the Imperial Palace 🙂
At Toyokuni Atelier Studio, you can admire, buy and learn sumi-e (Japanese ink wash painting) thanks to a free exhibition, original products and activities in English or Japanese language by an award-winning father and his son. This exciting art gallery/shop in Tokyo sells original sumi-e postcards (100 yens), paintings (usually 3.000-30.000 yens) and T-shirts (15.000 yens). You can also hold a brush during an interesting sumi-e lesson (1.000 yens only)! The Yes in Japan team strongly recommends you to visit Toyokuni Atelier Studio if you stay at a hotel in the Chiyoda ward of Tokyo 🙂
Toyokuni Atelier Studio is open from 12:00 to 19:00 from Monday to Saturday and from 12:00 to 17:00 on Sunday. The Japanese artist and his son are fluent in English. Between Jimbocho subway station and Kudanshita subway station, Toyokuni Atelier Studio is the Japanese art gallery numbered “2” on our map of Chiyoda ward (autumn/winter 2014 version).
Conveniently, you can pay your sumi-e purchases or lessons at Toyokuni Atelier Studio by credit card. The best of Asian traditional art and modern shopping in Japan!
Our manager in Tokyo, Sébastien Duval, is finalizing the second Yes in Japan map in English to motivate foreigners to visit Chiyoda ward and to help travellers visiting, staying, living, working or studying in/near Tokyo Jimbocho “Book Town” and Akihabara “Electric Town”.
The map now informs about Jimbocho station, Takebashi station, and their surroundings: Ebisudo gallery, the national museum of modern art, the east gardens of the Imperial Palace…
We will upload this map before 31 October 2014 and will distribute its paper version to our partners (local hotels…) at the end of October and beginning of November 2014. Tell your friends to get the map online before flying to Japan or on paper at a local hotel after arriving in Tokyo!
At lunch, we savoured a black cabbage and pork stew with Italian-style bread in Tokyo at Nago café. You can enjoy this special dish until Saturday 11 October 2014!
1000 yens (= 9.1 Dollars = 7.3 Euros) per person well spent 🙂
Nago café is a restaurant in Chiyoda ward, just a few minutes walk from Jimbocho and Suidobashi stations, Travel Stand Japan, Hotel Niwa Tokyo, Hotel Villa Fontaine Kudanshita, and Hotel Villa Fontaine Jimbocho (F4 on our Yes in Japan map):
