Impressive Japanese archery during the 44th All Kanto Student Kyudo Championships at the Nippon-budokan

We watched impressive Japanese archery “kyudo” during the 44th All Kanto Student Kyudo Championships in Chiyoda ward on Saturday 21 June 2014.
Impressive Japanese archery during the 44th All Kanto Student Kyudo Championships at the Nippon-budokan.

Japanese girls and boys coming from various universities competed with tall bows, shooting arrows with gloves and wearing kyudo traditional clothes, which includes a chest protector for female archers to protect their breasts from the bowstring. We could clearly see everything: the long rows of Japanese archers, individual movements of the participants and of their bows, the trajectory of the arrows, and the arrows in/near the targets. Around us, fellow students, friends and family members noisily encouraged their favourite archers!

Today in Tokyo: National flag of Japan & Japanese girls in kimono

Why do we see so many big Japanese national flags in the streets of Tokyo today? Because schools all over Japan display the national flag for the graduation of their students these days… Yes, in Japan the academic year starts with Spring in April and ends with Winter the following March.

Lucky or well prepared, you can see happy Japanese boys in business suit and Japanese girls in kimono (traditional dress) before/after their graduation ceremony near universities, in the streets, at hotels…

Piano & song concert at Horizon, Italian restaurant in Tokyo

Café & Dining Horizon (Tokyo) holds special live music events such as Chika and Mary’s relaxing piano and song concert tonight. From 20:00 to 21:00, they performed alone then as a duo. Respectively from Tokyo and Yamagata prefecture, these two charming Japanese girls sang in Japanese language, which had a sweet feeling 🙂

Chika and Mary during a piano and song concert at Horizon.

Our inbound travel manager, Sébastien, savoured delicious pasta with Gorgonzola sauce while listening to the songs. His evaluation: nice food, evening, singers, and songs! His advice: reserve in advance because the entrance fee is only 500 yens (very cheap for Japan) and the restaurant was full tonight!

To know about upcoming concerts at this Italian restaurant, check its Facebook page in Japanese or our dedicated page in English.

Thanks to Mary and Chika for allowing us to use their photos, and good luck for their next concert in Tokyo!

Impressions: Wonderful dances at Furusato-matsuri Tokyo 2014

No doubt, the annual Furusato-matsuri Tokyo held at Tokyo Dome is wonderful to see dances in Japan whether you are a Japanese resident or foreign tourist. No need to speak Japanese, children welcome, cheap tickets (1.000-1.500 yens). If you enjoy Japanese festivals, attend the event this week (end on Sunday) or free time for it in January 2015!

Yesterday, our travel agent Sébastien was charmed by the traditional dances, gorgeous costumes, characteristic songs, numerous drums… The large main stage allowed big groups of Japanese dancers and drummers to perform!

Crowds gathered to admire the holy Iwami-kagura; this most exciting dance from Shimane prefecture involves a warrior fighting giant snakes/dragons. Do not miss a chance to see that dance from the front row because most movements are at ground level! After the performances, the visitors could touch the costumes, get photographed with the dancers and musicians, play Japanese drums, dance with professionals…

Besides, Sébastien tasted (for free) many delicious regional foods, green tea, plum liqueur… and discovered high-quality regional products such as sandals of snake skin (interesting to touch), tea pots of many shapes, decorated chopsticks, fabrics used to make toys… Surrounded by fantastic mascots and Japanese girls in uniform promoting different areas of Japan, he could not resist buying a (tee-shirt) souvenir 🙂

To finish, a giant float from Chichibu prefecture in front of which many people got a souvenir photo:
