Lessons

Painting on traditional paper Washi is quite an experience! Master Toyokuni teaches sumi-e at all levels in English or Japanese during lessons of 90 minutes 🙂 Make a reservation and bring 8.000 yens per person. Notes for July, August & September 2015: His summer lessons only take place between 13:00 and 17:00 so we recommend you to reserve at least two weeks before your selected day.

As a special offer for foreigners only, the son Yuta teaches sumi-e to beginners in English or Japanese during lessons of 30 minutes. No reservation needed; just bring 1.000 yens per person. You typically draw a simple cat’s face to get used to the brush and black ink then see how to paint a Daruma, bamboo or landscape with mountains and rivers.

Note: Each lesson is limited to 5 students for practical reasons. Contact the Yes in Japan team to request special arrangements for bigger groups, professionals on business trip, French speakers… (early reservation recommended)

Exhibitions

Master Toyokuni exposes different artworks at his gallery every month; finished art pieces or works in progress, book-size or wall-size, black & white or colour… Enjoy the exhibitions, discuss the art works, and maybe meet the Master!

1-sentence message for you by the father and son. Add videos, photo with DS/yij-logo/ij-logo/ds-name-tag.
Creation date of the atelier?
Children and adults welcome; checking minimal age.

To buy washi, why not go to the nearby specialist store yamagataya-kamiten? To see and buy ukiyo-e art works, why not go to the nearby Ebisudo gallery too? To buy more books for children, why not go to the nearby Bookhouse Jinbocho too? For tubes for drawings, go to Bumpodo.

Will you get a cute certificate in Japanese and English after a sumi-e lesson? Kids would love it. Ask them to write your name in kanji…

If you wish to buy a sumi-e kit, brushes or inks, ask the Yes in Japan team for advice!
