“World War 2” tour in Tokyo: Calendar for February 2015

Interested in Japanese history? Learn about World War 2 in Japan thanks to our original walking tour in Tokyo “After the War: Fighters and Civilians” in English or French on 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 24, 25, 26, or 27 February 2015. This interesting tour includes a visit at Yasukuni Shrine and the National Showa Memorial Museum. Why? First, Yasukuni Shrine is one of the most important places related to war in Japan (although foreigners are more likely to think about Hiroshima and Nagasaki); it enshrines 2.466.000 souls of soldiers and ordinary citizens dead for Japan, and features unexpected statues! Second, the National Showa Memorial Museum has excellent exhibitions related to life in Japan around and during World War Two; we recommend you to visit this museum with Yes in Japan staff because explanations are almost only in Japanese language…

How to go to Petit Bonheur in Tokyo? From Iidabashi station…

Petit Bonheur is near Tokyo’s Iidabashi station: 3 minutes from exit West if you arrive by JR train or 4 minutes from exit B2a if you arrive by subway. Petit Bonheur is also near APA Hotel Tokyo-kudanshita (5 minutes), Hotel Grand Palace (6 minutes) and Hotel Metropolitan Edmont (6 minutes).

Go to Petit Bonheur when you visit the nearby Tokyo Grand Shrine, Yasukuni Shinto Shrine or Kagurazaka district! This restaurant is a great option if you study Japanese at a language school in Iidabashi area: it has a cheap lunch buffet with delicious food 🙂

Martial Arts Hall of Japan: Purposes, area, events, tours

42m-high octagonal “Martial Arts Hall of Japan“, the Nippon-budokan was built in Kitanomaru Park to host the first Olympic judo competition during the 1964 Summer Games, promote Japanese martial arts especially among the young, foster health by training body & mind, and contribute to world peace! 14.471 spectators can watch exciting concerts, demonstrations, tournaments… Contact the Yes In Japan team to watch or participate to martial arts lessons in a dojo of the annexe 🙂

The Martial Arts Hall of Japan is in the Chiyoda ward of Tokyo near Kudanshita subway station, Hotel Grand Palace, the National Showa Memorial Museum, Tsukudo Shrine, and Yasukuni Shrine. See our calendar to enjoy a martial arts event there (several every month), often for free or a few thousand yens. In autumn 2014, you can go watch aikido, judo, karate, kendo… Be careful, the starting and ending time of the events vary.

Yasukuni Shrine: Background, location, opening time, tour

Emperor Meiji founded the Yasukuni Shinto Shrine in 1869 to enshrine the soul of soldiers and ordinary citizens dead for Japan. It currently enshrines 2.466.000 souls including girls and women involved in relief operations on battlefields, students working in factories during wars… As you may know from international news, visits of Yasukuni Shrine by Japanese politicians are a major source of tension between Japan, China and South Korea!

Yasukuni Shrine is in the Chiyoda ward of Tokyo near Kudanshita subway station, Hotel Grand Palace, Tsukudo Shrine, and the Martial Arts Hall of Japan. In the second half of November, you can usually enjoy its beautiful alley of trees with autumn yellow leaves! Open for free from 06:00, it may close at 17:00, 18:00 or 19:00…

  • January, February: 06:00-17:00.
  • March, April: 06:00-18:00.
  • May, June, July, August: 06:00-19:00.
  • September, October: 06:00-18:00.
  • November, December: 06:00-17:00.

Japanese martial arts tournaments/championships in Tokyo: June 2014 calendar

Fans of Japanese martial arts, go see an impressive tournament/championship of judo, jukendo, karate, kendo or kyudo in June 2014 at the Nippon-budokan (Chiyoda ward, Tokyo). Notes: Judo and karate are practised without weapon, jukendo with an armour and a rifle replica, kendo with an armour and bamboo sword, kyudo with a bow and arrows.

Feel love at the nearby site of the first Shinto wedding, discover a maze of charming small streets in Kagurazaka and enter a beautiful modern shrine with intriguing lucky charms and a bright coffee shop!
