Shopping for ukiyo-e in Japan at Tokyo’s Ebisudo Gallery

At Ebisudo Gallery, you can buy Japanese woodblock prints/paintings from the Edo period, Meiji period or modern era, representing a samurai, a Japanese lady in kimono, the fours seasons of Japan, a Buddhist temple, Mount Fuji… This art shop in Chiyoda ward sells ukiyo-e originals (5.000 to 40.000 yens and beyond!) by famous artists as well as cheap reproductions and ukiyo-e calendars. Ebisudo Gallery currently selling the 2015 Calendar “Hasui” for 1.300 yens. We liked this small shop; check it out if you go on a shopping tour in Tokyo!

Ebisudo Gallery is open from 11:00 to 18:30 from Monday to Saturday. The nice Japanese lady running the business speaks English and French; call 03-3219-7651 for information or ask your hotel’s staff to contact this specialist store for you. Near Jimbocho subway station and Sakura Hotel & Café Jimbocho, Ebisudo Gallery is the Japanese art gallery marked “4” on the Yes in Japan free map of Tokyo Chiyoda ward for autumn/winter 2014.

Of course, you can pay your ukiyo-e purchases at Ebisudo Gallery by credit card and ask for international delivery. Traditional art but modern business 🙂

Japanese food/drinks in Japan at Tokyo’s Nishiki

At Nishiki, you can eat sushi (raw seafood with rice), kaiseki cuisine, pork, duck… and drink beer, saké… The Japanese food and drinks are excellent and the menu is reasonably priced: 1.230 yens for a sushi lunch, 950 yens for duck at dinner time, 3.900 yens for a seasonal meal, 610 yens for a beer… Great for travellers on a gourmet tour of Tokyo!

Nishiki is open from 11:30 to 14:00 then from 17:30 to 21:00 from Monday to Saturday. Some staff speaks English; call 03-3292-3960 to make a reservation at this Japanese restaurant or ask the Japanese staff of your hotel to reserve for you. On the first floor of the Gakushi-kaikan hotel between Jimbocho subway station and Takebashi subway station, Nishiki is marked “1” on Yes in Japan‘s best map of Tokyo Chiyoda published for autumn & winter 2014.

Conveniently, you can pay your meal at Nishiki by credit card (not so common in Japan). Enjoy!

Shopping for books in Japan at Tokyo’s Bookhouse Jinbocho

At Bookhouse Jinbocho, you can admire a great decoration, relax and find a Japanese treasure for you, your family, your friends… You will love this bookshop designed for all children! The books, toys and other selected products are wonderful and affordable: 1.000 yens for an illustrated book of Japanese legends, 580 yens for a small toy, 380 yens for cute baby socks… The Yes in Japan team recommends you to go shopping at this popular shop when you tour Japan!

Restaurant in Tokyo: Nago Café closed

Nago Café closed permanently tonight. It is a pity because the Japanese chef Tsugumi NASHIRO cooked delicious Okinawan cuisine at this restaurant…

18 November 2014: Relaxing live jazz at The Adirondack Café!

The Yes in Japan team just enjoyed a relaxing live jazz concert and delicious Philly sandwich at The Adirondack Café (Chiyoda ward, Tokyo). The warm room was packed with friendly Japanese music lovers who bought the players’ CDs 🙂

The Japanese musicians played the piano, guitar, bass, and clarinet from 19:30 to 22:00:

The music charge was only 2.800 yens! To enjoy another great jazz live, get off at Jimbocho subway station and walk to The Adirondack Café next Tuesday evening…

Music in Tokyo: Live jazz at The Adirondack Café

You can enjoy live jazz for two hours at The Adirondack Café every Tuesday evening and the second Saturday of every month; the “music charge” is only 2.800 yens per person. Listen to the music, watch the Japanese musicians, savour the food, and have fun with the locals!

The Adirondack Café is a restaurant/bar 3 minutes east of Jimbocho station (Chiyoda ward, Tokyo). Yes in Japan team members had a great time there 🙂
